The Year at a Glance

This year, BSU is focusing on 5 core values, and the activities and events planned for our constituency reflect them!
Academic Excellence:
The goal of every college student is graduation, and as the Black Student Union, we want to do everything in our power to help our members reach that goal. This year we have decided to increase our focus on education. BSU members can look forward to more "College Success" workshops,  a BSU Honor Roll ( with a reward for our member with the highest GPA), and Study Tables every Monday from 5pm to 7pm in the African American Student Center.
Community Service and Outreach:
Giving back to the community is a critical aspect of the BSU platform this year. We will be increasing our outreach efforts on the WSU campus and in the city of Pullman as a whole. Our members will have the opportunity to volunteer their time to community food drives, events hosted by other WSU organizations, and other projects in collaboration with the Center for Civic Engagement. One of our most well known community outreach programs, VIBES, is another opportunity for our members to give back to their community. Visionaries Inspiring Black Empowered Students is a conference co-sponsored by the Black Student Union and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated. Each year we bring over a hundred inner-city students to Washington State University to give them a glimpse of college life, and encourage them to attend college themselves. WSU students have the ability to organize the conference as chairperson of one of our eight VIBES committees, spend one-on-one time with the students as a Team Leader, or simply volunteer their time during the conference to help keep everything running smoothly. VIBES is truly a community effort that touches the lives of hundreds of high school students. The Black Student Union is very proud of the opportunity to sponsor it once again.
Cultural Enrichment and Awareness:
As WSU students, it's very easy to slip into the "Pullman Bubble," and lose awareness of the events occurring outside our university walls. Realizing this, BSU will be focusing on educating our students on issues affecting the state, the nation, the world, and subsequently, us. We also plan to inform our constituency of their African and African-American History, enabling our members to reconnect to their roots and gain valuable insight into the lives of their ancestors. In another effort to expand our cultural horizons, this year BSU members will also be exposed to other cultures, ethnic groups, and ways of life through collaboration with other Multicultural Student Organizations on campus.
Unity:
On top of everything else, BSU is here to serve as a network of friends and a support system as students complete their college years. Throughout the year we will be hosting a number of events that allow our members to simply relax, enjoy eachother's company, and develop friendships to last a lifetime.
